You go, girl. A new animated cartoon encourages young girls to become the heroes in their own lives. It’s the first time Ethiopian girls have seen heroes who look like them. The animated cartoon is breaking taboos by tackling subjects such as menstruation and child marriage.

On This Day in American History
On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard becomes the first American astronaut to travel into space after the Freedom 7 space capsule is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The suborbital flight lasts for 15 minutes, reaching a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere. The flight is a major triumph for the US space agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The jailing of a university lecturer for allegedly insulting Uganda’s president on Facebook has revived the debate about growing efforts to limit freedom of expression. VIDEO: UN Ambassador Nikki Haley has quickly emerged as a key voice in the Trump Administration, despite not supporting Candidate Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency. Some accuse the former South Carolina governor of being more about style than  substance, but those who have followed her career say the daughter of Indian immigrants should not be underestimated.

‘The largest tax reform in US history,’ is how administration officials describe President Trump’s tax plan, which was unveiled last week. Some analysts say calling the one-page proposal a ‘plan’ might be a bit of a stretch, but it does provide insight into the administration’s main priorities.

First, their land. Now their identity. Native Americans are fed up with scam artists who pretend to be American Indians. A number of public figures have been ‘outed’ for fictitious claims of Indian ancestry, most famously the man who called himself Iron Eyes Cody, who turned out to be Italian.

President Donald Trump alarmed South Korea when he said Seoul should pay an estimated $1 billion for THAAD, a controversial American missile defense system. An analyst in South Korea says a stressed Washington-Seoul alliance could send a message of division and weakness to Pyongyang, which could try to exploit that division.
