President Donald Trump’s plan to limit the hiring of skilled foreign workers has put Kansas City’s Indian community on edge. The president recently signed an executive order aimed at tightening the H1-B visa program. Overwhelmingly, those workers have come from India. Nearly 7,000 immigrants from India live in the greater Kansas City area, and the visa holders among them are trying not to panic about the future.

On May 3, 1851, San Francisco’s sixth Great Fire starts in a paint and upholstery store and ultimately destroys three-fourths of the city. Terrified residents who take shelter in their ‘fire-proof’ iron homes roast to death. Thirty people die and the damage is estimated at $12 million — about $322 million in today’s dollars.

A new British Empire could take shape in a post-Brexit world. Britain wants to boost trade ties with Africa after it leaves the European Union, a project some are calling ‘Empire 2.0.’  From London, VOA examines British plans to build on historical links with its former empire, which could face resistance in many African countries, suggesting dreams of a new empire clash with today’s reality.

A Russian media report claims the country has a mythical weapon that can wipe out the entire US Navy. The reports say a Russian warplane had successfully tested the electronic jamming device on a U.S. warship in the Black Sea on April 14.
