Donald Trump’s foreign policy is still a work in progress as his presidency reaches the symbolic 100-day milestone. However, as an understaffed White House team navigates through a spate of early tests, the outlines of a Trump Doctrine are emerging.

On April 28, 1967, boxing champ Muhammad Ali refuses to join the US Army, saying, ‘I ain’t got no quarrel with those Vietcong.’ Ali, a Muslim, cites religious reasons for his decision not to fight in Vietnam and is immediately stripped of his heavyweight title. Ali is convicted of draft evasion, but the US Supreme Court eventually overturns the verdict.

Hawaii ‘s attorney general says his decision to challenge President Donald Trump’s travel ban has its roots in World War II, when Americans were isolated based on their ancestry, which still stands as a national embarrassment. Douglas Chin argued the suit against Trump’s revised travel ban, which a Hawaii judge struck down. Chin tells VOA that disenfranchising or minimizing an entire class of people is not the American way.

The People’s Climate March targets the president’s efforts to undo action on climate change. VOA explores how a movement that started with a handful of scientists has blossomed to include everyone from low-income people of color to major corporations.

Somalia’s ambassador to the United States says immigration officials will no longer arrest illegal Somali immigrants in their homes or at their workplaces, but federal authorities have not confirmed any shift in policy. The Somali embassy had previously expressed concern that Somalis were being targeted by immigration officials. Almost 5,000 Somali nationals face deportation amid safety concerns because their homeland lacks a strong central government.

Known as the ancient city where East meets West, Hatra, capital of the first Arab kingdom, is considered one of the archeological jewels of Iraq. In a military operation known as ‘Muhammad Prophet of God,’ Iraqi soldiers recaptured Hatra from Islamic State fighters.  Here’s what the Iraqis found when they re-took the World Heritage site IS deemed ‘un-Islamic.’

Construction companies are major employers of the poor, but low wages persist in the industry, despite a building boom and recent rapid economic growth. In Phnom Penh, VOA meets construction workers who want their fair share of prosperity. 

Pakistan’s media is among the freest in Asia, according to a new report. But journalists in Islamabad tell VOA the reality is much more nuanced than that. While they have freedom to report on some issues, others are considered off limits, as reporters often steer clear of issues that might offend militant Islamists or the country’s powerful military.
