| On March 28, 1979, the worst US nuclear power accident in history occurs at Three Mile Island when a pressure valve in a reactor fails to close. Safety devices are in place to prevent the development of a larger crisis, but human workers misread confusing and contradictory readings and shut off the emergency water system. Cooling, radiation-contaminated water drains into adjoining buildings, and the core begins to dangerously overheat. The temperature rises to just 1,000 degrees short of meltdown. |
