There’s an epidemic in Indian Country, where increasing numbers of Native Americans are being evicted from their tribes with little warning and almost no legal recourse. Approximately 11,000 Indians have been exiled from dozens of tribes. As it turns out, the majority of disenrollment cases are about money.

On March 6, 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court issues the Dred Scott decision, affirming the right of slave owners to take their slaves into the West and essentially affirming slavery in the Western territories. Dred Scott was a slave who sued his owner for his freedom after he was taken to the free state of Illinois. The nation’s highest court ruled that all people of African ancestry, both slaves and free, were not citizens of the United States and therefore could not sue in federal court.  

Ishmael Delgado, one of a handful of undocumented immigrants across the nation who has sought sanctuary from deportation in a church, thinks often the life he left behind. He says it was like living the American dream — a wife and children, a nice home and a good car. Now he sleeps on a bed in a church basement.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded last October that Russia had interfered in the U.S. presidential election. And there have been ongoing questions about whether people associated with President Donald Trump have had inappropriate contact with Russian representatives. Here’s a rundown of the several related investigations that are underway right now.

From commander in chief to portrait artist: George W. Bush has focused much of his post-presidential work on helping wounded warriors who fought in the wars he authorized as president. In an interview with VOA, Bush shares his yearlong effort to paint the veterans’ portraits, transporting them from the battlefield to an art gallery in Dallas.

A planned underwater observation network in the South China Sea will reassert Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the disputed body of water. It’s the first project of its kind in the area and is expected to provide China with valuable information related to oil exploration, mineral searches and possible military uses.

Freedom from Islamic State comes at a heavy price for what was once one of Mosul’s poshest neighborhoods. VOA surveys the damage in the al-Josaq area in the western part of the city. The neighborhood was popular with IS, which generally helped itself to the largest and most luxurious homes.

It’s the first time a sitting Saudi monarch has visited in 47 years, and Indonesia is rolling out the red carpet for King Salman and his 1,500-member entourage. The two countries signed a $1 billion investment deal during King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s historic visit, but there’s a dark undercurrent to the Saudi-Indonesia relationship involving the alleged ongoing mistreatment of Indonesian migrant workers in Saudi Arabia.
