| On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X is assassinated in New York City. A prominent former leader in the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X, 39, is shot and killed by rival Black Muslims as he is about to address the Organization of Afro-American Unity. One year earlier, Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam and converted to traditional Islam. A pilgrimage to Mecca tempered his militant views on a separation of the races after he witnessed Muslims of all races coming together in peace. |
