| ON January 26, 1961, President John F. Kennedy appoints Janet Travell, 59, to be his personal physician, making her the first woman in history to hold that position. Dr. Travell, an orthopedist, has already worked closed with Kennedy for several years. She’s also designed the first prototypes of the modern ergonomic chair. The president suffers from persistent back pain that he says is the result of injuries sustained playing football and as a PT boat captain during World War II. |
