| On January 10, 1901, the U.S. oil industry is born when a drilling rig near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil that takes nine days to cap. Following the discovery, petroleum becomes the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes, while coal-powered ships and trains also convert to the liquid fuel. |
