After an election cycle dominated by negativity towards Muslims and immigrants, Ilhan Omar is a bright spot. The 34 year old came to the United States at the age of 12, and this week, was sworn into the Minnesota House of Representatives. Omar, who wears a headscarf, is the first Somali-American Muslim woman in the nation to hold political office at that level.

On January 5, 1972, President Richard Nixon authorizes $5.5 million to develop a space shuttle, which represents a giant leap forward in space travel technology. The ‘reusable’ aircraft is expected to be more cost-efficient than one-time-use-only rocket-launched capsules. The shuttle will also give NASA pilots and scientists more research time in space. NASA launches Columbia, the first space shuttle, in 1981.

Right place, right time. Thanks to a chance meeting, Kenyan teacher James Mwangi finds himself teaching his native Swahili to American college students. He’s part of a program that brings foreign instructors to the United States to teach at U.S. universities. But it wasn’t an easy process. Mwangi shares his journey from Nairobi to North Carolina.
