| On January 2, 1788, Georgia becomes the first Southern state to join the union after ratifying the U.S. Constitution. The move makes Georgia the fourth state in the modern United States. Named after King George II, Georgia is one of the more prosperous British colonies in America. However, during the Revolutionary War, a four-year British occupation of the territory pushes many Georgians to embrace the Patriot cause. |
