Get ready for a corporate-style White House. The American people elected a CEO who hopes to fill his Cabinet with generals and corporate executives. The selections are in keeping with Donald Trump’s assertion that titans of commerce and industry can do more for America than career civil servants and politicians. But when a general or CEO wants something done, people snap to it. How well can a big business approach work with the federal government’s notoriously slow-moving bureaucracy?

On This Day in American History
On December 29, 1890, the U.S. Cavalry kills 146 Sioux Indians — some historians believe the number is much higher — at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. The massacre is the last major confrontation in America’s deadly war against the Plains Indians.

Yea or Nay: Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks can’t get to work unless and until the U.S. Senate confirms them. What does that confirmation process entail? Here’s a quick rundown.

VIDEO: President Barack Obama swept into office on promises of hope and change. Eight years later, he leaves the White House with a high approval rating, but also after his choice for a successor, Hillary Clinton, suffered a stunning defeat to Republican Donald Trump. We take a look back at some of the defining moments that shaped America’s 44th president as a man and a leader.

The details are murky on the nationwide Syrian cease-fire plan announced Thursday by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow says the truce paves the way for Russian-brokered talks on a settlement of the five-year-long war. Western diplomats, who’ve been sidelined by the proposal, say Turkey’s participation gives the cease-fire proposal added weight because Ankara can strangle rebel groups that might break the ceasefire by blocking arms re-supplies crossing its border.

In September, three people attacked a police station in Mombasa, Kenya. Kenyan authorities say they stabbed one police officer and set fire to the building before being shot dead. The incident drew international attention, not only for the brazenness of the attack, but because all three attackers were women. It’s an example of female extremism that experts believe is on the rise across the African continent.
