| On December 23, 1783, following the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War and recognized American independence, Gen. George Washington resigns as commander in chief of the Continental Army. His willingness to return to civilian life is a critical turning point in the revolution. During the war, Washington had powers equivalent to those of a dictator, and he could have easily taken control of the new nation.
