On This Day in American History
On December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers launch a fierce attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The offensive strikes a critical blow to the Pacific fleet, sinking five of eight battleships, three destroyers, and sinking or damaging seven other ships, while also destroying more than 200 aircraft. When it’s over, 2,400 Americans are dead and 1,200 wounded. The following day, the United States declares war on Japan.

The Syrian Civil War has uprooted more than 5 million Syrians who have fled to neighboring states and Europe. With the momentum shifting, possibly irreversibly, in favor of the government of President Bashar al-Assad, the future of these displaced people is up in the air. Protests recently prompted the federal government to put the pipeline on hold. North Dakota, one of the least-populated and least-visited states, and the second-largest oil-producer in the United States, is looking for a faster way to transport oil.

In 2006, Trump filed a Chinese trademark application for the word ‘Trump’ but was rejected because someone else had already patented the name. Trump appealed, referring to China’s entire judicial system as ‘faithless, corrupt and tainted.’

VIDEO: After a decade at the helm of the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will leave the world body. VOA sits down with the world’s top diplomat as he reflects on his accomplishments during his tenure, whether he’ll run for president in his home country of South Korea, and on what shocked him about certain world leaders.
