| On December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers launch a fierce attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The offensive strikes a critical blow to the Pacific fleet, sinking five of eight battleships, three destroyers, and sinking or damaging seven other ships, while also destroying more than 200 aircraft. When it’s over, 2,400 Americans are dead and 1,200 wounded. The following day, the United States declares war on Japan. |
