Tale of two Americas: The recent presidential election was possibly the most divisive in modern-day U.S. history, with the popular vote being split almost straight down the middle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Trump supporters are celebrating the election results, while unhappy protesters take to the streets in several large cities. VOA examines the current American divide.

On This Day in American History
On November 15, 1867, the first stock ticker debuts in New York City. The up-to-the-minute price report revolutionizes the stock market. Investors across the country begin to receive information from the New York Stock Exchange almost immediately instead of having to wait for it to come by mail or messenger.

India’s information technology sector could suffer if President-elect Donald Trump acts on campaign promises to restrict immigration and bring jobs back to the United States. If election rhetoric targeting both immigration and outsourcing translates into policies, India’s $150 billion information technology sector could suffer because the U.S. is one of India’s largest investors.

The rest of the world is also waiting to see how Donald Trump will proceed on the international stage. While a top North Korean diplomat expressed indifference in regards to the president-elect, statements made by Trump on the campaign trail have some in the European Union feeling it’s time to rely less on Washington for Europe’s security.

‘A gut punch to the planet’ is how some environmentalists describe Donald Trump’s upset victory. Candidate Trump promised to reopen coal mines, pull out of the Paris climate treaty, and roll back environmental regulations. However, if he keeps those promises, it’s possible Trump could end up shipping more U.S. jobs to China.

Public executions, cutting off of hands, stoning a woman for adultery — VOA speaks with people in Iraq refugee camps, who are recounting the punishments they were forced to witness under Islamic State rule. In that tense atmosphere, neighbors often became suspicious of neighbors, a state of affairs that continues in the camp today.

The internet is becoming less free globally as governments around the world re-double efforts to limit free expression, ban encryption technologies, and punish users for posting content authorities find objectionable.
