| On November 9, 1872, the Great Boston Fire, which caused one of the costliest fire-related property losses in American history, breaks out in the city’s commercial district. By the time the blaze is extinguished the following day, 30 people are dead, almost 800 buildings are destroyed, 1,000 are homeless, 20,000 people are unemployed and there is $73.5 million in damage. |
