With its 38 electoral votes — second only to California — Texas is the foundation upon which any Republican victory in a presidential race is usually built. GOP candidates often win the Lone Star state by double-digit margins, but recent polls show an unexpected tight race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Since early voting began October 24, lines have been long, and turnout is expected to break records.

On This Day in American History
On November 4, 1979, hundreds of Iranian students storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and take more than 60 American hostages. The students, supporters of Muslim cleric Ayatollah Khomeini, demand the return of Iran’s deposed leader, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi, who is receiving cancer treatment in the United States. After the takeover, President Jimmy Carter orders a complete embargo of Iranian oil.
