As president, both George W. Bush and Barack Obama worked to cement America as a leader in the Asia-Pacific region, building strong U.S. leadership in the area to help counter China’s growing power and influence. But then, the 2016 presidential campaign happened. Now nations in the region question America’s ability to keep its promise to deeply engage the Asia-Pacific — a growing concern prompted by the caustic, tawdry and personal nature of this year’s election.

On This Day in American History
On October 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone receives 11 years in prison for tax evasion, marking the downfall of one of America’s most notorious criminals of the 1920s and 1930s. Capone, who earned his nickname ‘Scarface’ after being sliced across the cheek during a fight, ran a Chicago enterprise that included smuggling alcohol, gambling and prostitution.
