When Phyu Phyu Hlaing looks at Donald Trump, she sees more than just the man she won’t vote for in November. For the Burmese-American mother of two, the Republican presidential nominee summons painful memories from her past.

On This Day in American History
On September 29, 1789, at the urging of President George Washington, the U.S. Congress establishes the United States military. The Continental Army — which fought the British in the American Revolution under then Gen. George Washington — had been disbanded by the U.S. legislature after the Revolutionary War.

And the winner is… Pointing to a number of online polls, Republican Donald Trump claimed victory after this week’s debate against Democrat Hillary Clinton. However, the more traditional major research companies named Clinton as the debate winner, which got us thinking about the reliability of online polls and the role trolls might play.

Abandoning Obamacare? Voters in the swing state of Colorado aren’t just going to pick a new president this November, they’ll also decide whether to scratch President Barack Obama’s signature health care program, known as Obamacare, in favor of ColoradoCare, an unproven statewide, single-payer healthcare system.

VIDEO: Virginia is also a battleground state that could go for either candidate this presidential election. At a mosque outside of Washington, Muslim-Americans are working hard to make a difference by registering mosque-goers to vote.

Blisters, rashes, skin falling off, total vision loss, bloody vomit, diarrhea and severe respiratory problems are just some of the grim symptoms of chemical exposure reported by people in Darfur. Amnesty International says it’s the result of chemical weapons used by the government of Sudan, which suggests a radical departure from the past.

Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov has fought a largely successful battle against Islamist insurgents since his appointment by Russian President Vladimir Putin. In Grozny, Russia, VOA speaks to rights activists who argue that Kadyrov’s iron-fisted methods, such as collective punishment for militants’ relatives, make the cure as bad as the disease.

Negative attitudes toward older people can shorten their lives. In honor of the International day of older people, which is on Saturday, the World Health Organization is calling for global action to combat ageism. A widely-held misconception about older people is that they’re a drain on society, but here’s how they’re actually a net benefit.
