Who is Mike Pence? Far less flamboyant than Donald Trump, the Indiana governor is a low-key conservative who appeals to the more traditional wing of the Republican party. But is the campaign Trump wants to run conducive to what Pence brings to the ticket?

On Aug. 19, 1856, New Yorker Gail Borden gets a patent for his process of condensing milk – and killing dangerous bacteria – through vacuum evaporation. The U.S. government later contracts with his company to supply canned milk to Civil War troops. 

VOA is in Syria where government warplanes are targeting a majority Kurdish enclave for the first time since the start of the civil war there in 2011. The attacks appear to signal a break between Syrian government troops and Kurdish forces that had been working loosely together against Islamic State fighters.
