Hillary Clinton supporters are looking for a big boost from President Barack Obama when he addresses the Democratic National Convention Wednesday evening. In addition to singing Clinton’s praises, Obama is expected to tell supporters why he believes electing Republican nominee Donald Trump would put the United States on a risky path.

Eight years ago, Hillary Clinton came agonizingly close to winning the Democratic presidential nomination, garnering 18 million votes before losing to a freshman senator, Barack Obama. During her concession speech, she talked of her life-long struggle to overcome barriers to women. Tuesday night, Clinton secured the nomination and now hopes to shatter the ultimate glass ceiling by becoming president of the United States.

On This Day in American History
On July 27, 1974, the House Judiciary Committee recommends that America’s 37th president, Richard M. Nixon, be impeached and removed from office. The impeachment proceedings resulted from the Watergate scandal, which began with a break-in at the Democratic Party’s national headquarters at the Watergate apartment-hotel complex in Washington, D.C. Nixon eventually resigned, the only U.S. president ever to do so.

Democrats have embraced the Black Lives Matter movement at their convention this week, a sharp contrast to Donald Trump, who has criticized the social justice movement. A group of mothers who lost children to gun violence, or in police custody, took to the convention stage Tuesday night, but their appearance hasn’t convinced all African-American voters to support Hillary Clinton.

A message of inclusiveness has resounded throughout the convention. VOA caught up with an Indian-American delegate who marvels at seeing U.S. democracy in action up close, while some American Muslims clear up any questions about whether participation in U.S. politics is un-Islamic.

The world’s youngest nation is sending three athletes to compete in this summer’s Olympic Games in Brazil. South Sudan runner Santino Kenyi’s road to Rio hasn’t been easy. The 16 year old has to cope with civil war and poor training facilities. But, no matter what happens, the teenager will still make history.

With France reeling from a series of terror attacks — the most recent being Tuesday’s brutal slaying of an elderly priest by two men who pledged allegiance to Islamic State —  President Francois Hollande and security services risk losing the confidence of the French public.

A VOA reporter is among those injured in a truck bomb attack in Syria that killed more than 40 people. The explosion reportedly demolished the facade of the headquarters of the Kurdish militia, which controls the area. Our Kurdish service’s Zana Omar describes what happened.
