Marianne Williamson, a best-selling author of spiritual and self-help books, said when announcing her candidacy, “America is morally off course. … More than anything else in America today, we need a moral and spiritual awakening.”

Accomplishments: Williamson has written 12 spiritually focused books, including seven New York Times bestsellers. She started an HIV/AIDS organization in 1989 called Project Angel Food, which delivers meals to those too sick to feed themselves. In 2014, she launched an unsuccessful bid as an independent to win a congressional seat in California’s 33rd District.

Foreign policy: Williamson said she would have the U.S. re-enter the international Paris climate accord that President Donald Trump withdrew from. She also argues that the United States spends too much on the military and advocates for creating a U.S. Department of Peacebuilding.

What sets her apart: One of the few candidates who does not have an established political career, Williamson has built a large following through her books and motivational speeches. She first came to prominence with a 1992 appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and has become a regular guest on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Platform: Williamson supports universal health care, criminal justice reform and an overhaul of the public education system. She is also advocating for the United States to pay reparations for slavery, in the form of $100 billion to be disbursed for educational and economic projects determined by a council of African-American leaders.
