“We can’t take four more years of Donald Trump. And that’s why I’m running for president,” Walsh said on Twitter.

Accomplishments: After receiving a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago, Walsh began his career as a social worker in inner city Chicago. He won a U.S. House seat representing the city’s suburbs in 2010 as part of the Tea Party movement and made a name for himself as a cable news fixture who regularly criticized then-President Barack Obama. Walsh lost his re-election bid in 2012, and became a conservative talk radio host. He has a history of inflammatory statements, including calling Obama a “Muslim” and “traitor,” and said on Twitter before the 2016 election that if Trump lost, “I’m grabbing my musket. You in?”

Foreign policy: Walsh has criticized President Trump’s trade war with China and said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” “I believe in free trade. Everybody loses in a trade war.” He has also called for U.S. troops to come home from Afghanistan.

What sets him apart: Walsh supported Trump in 2016, but in recent months has called the president a liar and bully. On his campaign website, he said Trump “spews hate virtually every time he opens his mouth … Trump doesn’t represent us – he represents the worst of us.” Walsh has acknowledged his role in spreading some of Trump’s incendiary rhetoric, telling ABC News’ “This Week,” “I helped create Trump. There’s no doubt about that. The personal, ugly politics. I regret that.”

Platform: Walsh says he wants to reduce the deficit and end Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods. He has criticized Trump from the right, saying in an op-ed piece in The New York Times that Trump “isn’t a conservative.”
