Kirsten Gillibrand (KEER’-sten JIHL’-uh-brand) said in her announcement video that when women are at the leadership table, “the outcomes are better.” She is running so that she can “fight for other people’s kids as hard as I would fight for my own.”

Accomplishments: Previously represented New York’s 20th congressional district in the U.S. House.

Foreign policy: She voted in favor of President Donald Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria and Afghanistan, and against allowing state and municipal governments to punish companies that boycott, divest from or place sanctions on Israel to protest that country’s treatment of Palestinians.

What sets her apart: Gillibrand has been among the most vocal lawmakers advocating for gender issues, including combatting sexual harassment and military sexual assault, equal pay for women and paid family leave. She has touted her ability to win over more conservative rural voters, but has also faced criticism for previously supporting more right-leaning positions on gun rights and immigration issues.

Platform: Universal paid-leave program, stronger public schools, more accessible job training, a single-payer health care system known as “Medicare-for-All.”
