Tanzania’s Ivory Queen
Yang Fen Glan is on trial in Dar es Salaam, accused of leading one of Africa’s biggest ivory smuggling rings. Her case threatens to expose the illegal network behind elephant poaching as Tanzanian authorities work to end ivory trade routes to the Far East and the Chinese — after years of prodding — ban ivory sales. Still, “Hong Kong is one of the big global centers for the ivory trade,” says Gavin Edwards, Director of Conservation at the World Wildlife Fund in Hong Kong.
About the project
In this project, journalists from VOA’s Africa Division and Mandarin Service examine poaching in Africa, the multinational criminal syndicates behind it, and the efforts to reduce demand for tusks and horns in Asian countries where they are sold.
